I have been waiting for this moment all along.

Thank you everyone for supporting Definition. Really, thank you guys.

Definition started off as a bold idea to disrupt dictionaries that were present on iOS. Some were slow, some were chunky, some were just plain annoying. You would be reading a book and trying to find a meaning, and when you had, you would be lost, since you forgot why you were searching the word in the first place.

Definition aims to solve that problem. You type a word, and it instantly shows you the definition, together with a thesaurus that can help you learn new words. You don’t even need the internet. All you need is the app.

It has been a long journey since the first version, and I still have very fond memories of the conception of this idea.

I would also like to thank Dustin Schau for helping to design this pixel-perfect app, my sister and brother-in-law Andrea & Shawn for their continuous support as well, and of course, all of you who have in one way or another supported this app.

To celebrate this occasion, I will be giving out free Definition cards. No matter where you stay, I will post it to you. Just email me. Offer valid till 31 August 2011.

A bug that spanned across two months

As some of you know, from v3.0 onwards, Definition added support for printing (for iOSes > 4.2). Now the unfortunate thing is, catching for phones that do not have a newer iOS is not enough. According to Marco Arment,

For example, the iPhone doesn’t support UIPopoverController, and iOS 4.1 doesn’t support 4.2’s new printing API, so I need to ensure that my universal app never attempts to show a popover on iPhone, and never attempts to print a document on pre-4.2 OSes. If I try to access functionality that doesn’t exist, the app will crash.

The full fix is documented at his blog.

For those that have been encountering app crashes, the app should be finally fixed. I apologize for taking so long. Thank you for supporting Definition!

Version 3.2 has been submitted. It fixes crashes on those who run iOS 3.1.3 and below. I have finally identified the root cause and submitted a release that will fix the bug. I deeply apologize for the delay and any inconvenience caused. The new version should be out by next week.

Define from Safari!

We now make it easier to define a word when you are reading something on the web.

Simply type define://YOURWORD in the address bar.
Note: definition://YOURWORD & defapp://YOURWORD works as well :)

You can easily return to Safari / other apps(see below) after defining by pressing a button at the bottom.

We also now support the x-callback-url interapp communication!

An example implementation:

definition://x-callback-url/define?word=hello&x-source=Instapaper&x-success=instapaper://

Parameters:

word (required): The word you want to define.
x-source: Your application name.
x-success: The callback URL.
